{"id":93710,"date":"2023-05-26T04:59:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T18:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=93710"},"modified":"2023-05-26T11:11:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T01:11:46","slug":"local-hotels-claim-state-hospitality-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/local-hotels-claim-state-hospitality-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Local hotels claim state hospitality awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO of Ballarat\u2019s institutions have won out against statewide competition at this year\u2019s Australian Hotels Associations\u2019 Victorian State Awards for Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Announced last week during at a gala event in Melbourne, the Best Hotel award for Pub Style Accommodation went to Oscar\u2019s Hotel and Cafe Bar while Western Hotel\u2019s Henry Wines won the Emerging Leader of the Year and the Peter Burnett Scholarship for Hospitality Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Having previously won an AHA State award for Overall Hotel of the Year (Regional) in 2018, Oscar\u2019s owner Nicky Quinlan said their accolades are down to the hard work of their staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always very exciting and we\u2019re very grateful for winning it and always appreciative of the work our staff do because that\u2019s the reason we win awards,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBallarat\u2019s hospitality just has a great feel in general. It\u2019s consistently busy. Winning this award makes us feel like we\u2019re doing the right thing and it gives validation to our staff\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got about 50 staff. One of them, Leone has been with us for 19 years, and she is our main housekeeper who\u2019s been with us this whole time. It\u2019s because of her that I think we won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Quinlan family is celebrating 20 years of Oscar\u2019s this year, which Ms Quinlan said makes their win even more exciting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93712\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93712 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Henry-Wines-Western-Hotel03-scaled-e1684900436829-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Henry-Wines-Western-Hotel03-scaled-e1684900436829-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Henry-Wines-Western-Hotel03-scaled-e1684900436829-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Henry-Wines-Western-Hotel03-scaled-e1684900436829-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Henry-Wines-Western-Hotel03-scaled-e1684900436829.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Wines has spent nearly a decade in hospitality with his experience mainly being in cafes before working at The Western two years ago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alongside his award, Mr Wines will be able to use his$10,000 scholarship on any course in hospitality he chooses.<\/p>\n<p>He said winning the accolade highlights the industry as a viable career option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are good careers in hospitality,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do at The Western is let people know there are careers here, especially with high school kids where it doesn\u2019t get talked about as much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the award, to be an emerging leader, means being a leader to your staff and also within the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about nurturing a comfortable hospitality environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m assistant manager here at the hotel.
