{"id":93901,"date":"2023-06-02T04:59:04","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T18:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=93901"},"modified":"2023-06-02T09:36:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-01T23:36:39","slug":"local-beermakers-brew-up-big-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/local-beermakers-brew-up-big-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Local beermakers brew up big wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO of Ballarat\u2019s brewers have received gongs in this year\u2019s Australian International Beer Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Dollar Bill Brewing reigned with three accolades including Champion Australian Beer while Aunty Jacks staff won the Best European Style Lager award for their Mair St M\u00e4rzen.<\/p>\n<p>Dollar Bill Brewing netted the top honour as well as the Best Fruit Beer award for their Candy Paint 2023 Barrel Aged Sour Ale with the business also receiving the Australian Gypsy Brewer award.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Nolle co-founded Dollar Bill with his wife Fiona in 2017, and said their limited production has allowed the business to maintain its quality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re restrained in that we don\u2019t produce a lot and we really concentrate on the quality of what we do produce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe average about 20,000 litres a year compared to the majority of micro or medium-sized breweries that will make 40,000 in a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nolles are no stranger to the Champion Australian Beer award, having previously won the accolade in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Their awards, received last week at the Melbourne Showgrounds, add to an already-busy period for Dollar Bill following the launch of their Ballarat Steam Ale in collaboration with Federation University.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nolle said the Australian International Beer Awards highlighted Ballarat\u2019s prestige in the brewing industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey used to run the package tastings here, so there\u2019s a lot about it that links back to here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have it come back here between us and Aunty Jacks, we just thought Ballarat is killing it so we\u2019re really proud for the town as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93903\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93903\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Best-European-Style-Lager-e1685504621554-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Best-European-Style-Lager-e1685504621554-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Best-European-Style-Lager-e1685504621554-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Best-European-Style-Lager-e1685504621554-272x182.jpeg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/Best-European-Style-Lager-e1685504621554.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aunty Jacks brewers Matt Ives and Peter Aldred claimed the Best European Style Lager award for their Mair St M\u00e4rzen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aunty Jacks brewer and brewing educator Peter Aldred introduced his award-winning beer about two years ago, and has been with the business since it started in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He said the brewery\u2019s award-winning draught is a spin a German tradition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe M\u00e4rzen style is an old-fashioned German style that they\u2019d often serve at beer festivals,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re traditionally brewed in March for October. We brewed them in October for March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re slightly higher in alcohol and more malty than standard lagers of the time. For us it was about the selection of malts that would give it that sweet, biscuity flavour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very gratifying to produce a beer your peers think is of great quality.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWO of Ballarat\u2019s brewers have received gongs in this year\u2019s Australian International Beer Awards.
