WHETHER you like to tango, rumba, or do the bogo-pogo, it\u2019s almost time to dance down to the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts.<\/p>\n
All the colour, heart, and humour of Baz Luhrmann\u2019s iconic 1992 film will be brought to life by Ballarat Grammar\u2019s senior school students as they stage Strictly Ballroom the Musical this July.<\/p>\n
Assistant director and year 11 student Holly Douglas said a cast of about 100 have been rehearsing the iconic multicultural Australian story since the end of term one.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe meet Scott, who is a pro ballroom dancer, and has been a dancer his whole life,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s bored with ballroom dancing and wants to try some new steps.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe meets Fran, who encourages his love of trying new steps, and they come together. She brings him into her world of her Spanish family, and Spanish-inspired steps.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe encourages him to step out of his comfort zone, and there\u2019s a bit of conflict over this between traditional ballroom, and the fun things they\u2019re trying out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Holly has been supporting director and performing arts teacher Elena Sabellico, offering notes and helping with blocking.<\/p>\n
She said the production\u2019s themes of inclusivity, connectedness, and love have been some of the best parts of being involved.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all about celebrating the things that make you different, and the cast is really grabbing onto that this year, and they\u2019re enjoying taking part in this story,\u201d Holly said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic, flashy, and out there, with glitz and glam, colours and sequins, but there is tenderness underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n
