{"id":94921,"date":"2023-07-21T04:56:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T18:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=94921"},"modified":"2023-07-18T09:04:09","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T23:04:09","slug":"calls-for-hardline-approach-to-trolley-folly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/calls-for-hardline-approach-to-trolley-folly\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for hardline approach to trolley folly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THERE are calls in the community for a crackdown on trolley dumping, with twelve found recently within a small area on Grevillea Road, not far from Stockland Wendouree.<\/p>\n<p>City of Ballarat\u2019s Cr Ben Taylor has been calling for changes to current trolley laws for months, saying they aren\u2019t acting as a deterrent, yet so far there has been no action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go out Wendouree way it seems to be rampant,\u201d he said. \u201cNothing has really changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you get one or two it seems to be popular to put as many as possible in one spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City\u2019s current trolley rules come under <em>Community Local Law 2017<\/em>, which prohibits abandoning trolleys on roads or vacant land.<\/p>\n<p>It also stipulates that companies are responsible for their collection, however Cr Taylor said large corporations are failing to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupermarkets aren\u2019t going and picking up the trolleys when they\u2019re abandoned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes down to an economic point of view, it costs money to collect trolleys or pay a third party to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cr Taylor said the time for incentivising corporations to collect their trolleys is over, and a hardline approach is necessary to curb this problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think now it\u2019s about a stick more than incentives, it\u2019s about the penalties that can apply if they\u2019re abandoned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve provided that opportunity when there\u2019s not really any restrictions so now there needs to be more of a penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THERE are calls in the community for a crackdown on trolley dumping, with twelve found recently within a small area on Grevillea Road, not far from Stockland Wendouree.
