{"id":95603,"date":"2023-08-19T04:58:52","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T18:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=95603"},"modified":"2023-08-15T09:47:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T23:47:20","slug":"wonder-dog-flies-in-to-save-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/wonder-dog-flies-in-to-save-the-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Wonder Dog flies in to save the day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">CAPTAIN Fly the Wonder Dog was at Ballarat Psychology Clinic last week as part of his work as a therapy dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fly is a three-year-old border collie who brings smiles to the faces of children and adults in challenging mental health situations.<\/p>\n<p>His owner, Julie Jammet, said the presence of a dog makes a huge difference in her sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realised that it can be quite frightening and confronting facing someone you\u2019ve never met and telling them your life story,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did some research, and it was pretty clear that when there is an animal in the room people feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve also shown that the animal can act as a social bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey see me interact with my dog as a nurturing, caring person so that helps with trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Captain Fly can help clients feel more at ease when having difficult conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work with a lot of adults on the autism spectrum, and it is quite hard making eye contact with someone so having him there helps with that because they can pat him,\u201d said Ms Jammet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see how rewarding it is, is just beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had people share things with me I don\u2019t they would have if he wasn\u2019t in the room, it makes them feel so much safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Jammet and Captain Fly have gone through extensive training to acquire the relevant certifications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not taking your dog to work, we are a trained team that has had to go through a lot of training and we have to get recertified every year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a four-day assessment where they look at you as a handler and if you can read your dog\u2019s body language and know when they\u2019re comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s also been tested to make sure he has the temperament of a therapy dog such as being interested in people and seeking contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To follow Fly\u2019s adventures, check out his Instagram <strong>@captainfly_thewonderdog<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAPTAIN Fly the Wonder Dog was at Ballarat Psychology Clinic last week as part of his work as a therapy dog.
