A FUN and safe after-school space is open to entertain twelve to eighteen year olds each week in Wendouree West.<\/p>\n
Ballarat Youth Services has launched Wendouree Youth Space, open at the suburb\u2019s Neighbourhood Centre on Holly Grove each Thursday afternoon from 4pm to 5.30pm during school terms.<\/p>\n
Youth facilitator Hannah Boord said the aim is to create a relaxed and comfortable environment for young people to interact, be themselves, and try something new.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope to encourage them to be creative at home, at school, or to cook their own food,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re helping them learn some really basic skills in a fun way.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s also another option for those wanting to change up their after school activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring winter there\u2019s not always a lot to do at home, and they can\u2019t play outside, so Youth Space is something fun to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Twelve-year-old Belle has been attending the sessions for the last five weeks and said she is enjoying the social, inclusive, and accessible space, where activities like board games and art making are provided.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I saw this was opening, I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet other people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love that there are bean bags, fidgets, and things for people with sensory issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was excited that every week, one of the children gets to make the toasties, and I was the lucky person that gets to make them this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also really like how welcoming and happy the staff are.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Wendouree Youth Space is funded by the State Government\u2019s Engage! program, and City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson said it\u2019s an ideal way to activate a part of the recently updated Wendouree West Reserve precinct.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not just centralising services, but taking them out into the community, because not every young person has the capacity to come into the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe State Government has provided some money for a youth mentoring aspect, as well, which is great to give people exposure to what working in the youth sector is like.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
