{"id":95897,"date":"2023-08-26T04:56:49","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T18:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=95897"},"modified":"2023-08-24T15:57:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T05:57:17","slug":"sportsmens-club-to-host-macedonian-marvel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/sportsmens-club-to-host-macedonian-marvel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sportsmen\u2019s Club to host Macedonian Marvel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN rules footy fans are invited to hear one of the game\u2019s all-time greats speak in Ballarat early next month.<\/p>\n<p>Collingwood Football Club legend and Hall of Famer Peter Daicos will be the Ballarat Sportsmen\u2019s Club\u2019s special guest speaker at their next dinner on Wednesday 6 September.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Macedonian Marvel\u2019 is set to share insights from his 250-game career as a Magpie, from his 1979 debut until his retirement in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the 14 years, Daicos was a vice-captain, premiership player, and a leading goalkicker, amassing 549 majors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the 1990 season, Daicos scored 97 goals,\u201d said BSC committee member Greg Whitecross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis skills in scoring from seemingly impossible angles, as well as his ability to get rid of defenders, led pundits to start naming him The Magician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaicos was selected three times in the VFL-AFL All-Australian team, represented Victoria five times, with 12 goals, won two best and fairest awards and was five times leading goal kicker at the Magpies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn retirement, Daicos was selected in the Collingwood Team of the Century and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Any follower of the AFL in 2023 would find it difficult to be unaware of the next generation of high-performing Daicos athletes, with sons Josh and Nick making an impact as teammates in Collingwood Football Club\u2019s senior men\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>Set for the Ballarat Golf Club, the two-course dinner is $45 per person with the event starting at 7pm, with a 6.30pm arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Register attendance by Sunday 3 September via ballaratsportsmensclub@gmail.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN rules footy fans are invited to hear one of the game\u2019s all-time greats speak in Ballarat early next month.
