MEMBERS of the Lions Club of Mount Bolton and District were at the Miners Rest Tavern on Sunday with the aim of engaging with the community and attracting new members.<\/p>\n
Though their efforts saw no new recruits, club president Kevin Davies said it was important to formally introduce themselves to the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to get the locals familiar with the fact we have a Lions club out here,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re always trying to find new members.<\/p>\n
\u201cMiners Rest hasn\u2019t had a Lions club for about four years. It\u2019s a big, fast-growing area and we won\u2019t be stepping on anyone\u2019s toes so we thought this would be a great opportunity to attract more members.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople generally see this as more of a mature-aged person, and we want to get people to see it\u2019s for everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we didn\u2019t have any success on the day, we\u2019ll keep trying. We\u2019re not going to get half a dozen in one go, it\u2019d be more one or two people a year.\u201d<\/p>\n
The club primarily covers Lexton, Learmonth, and Waubra, and currently has about 20 members.<\/p>\n
Mr Davies has been a part of the club for about four years, and joined as part of an active community effort to revive the group when its membership whittled down to three people.<\/p>\n
He said the problem of attracting new people to Lions isn\u2019t uncommon.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven places like Creswick are struggling with members,\u201d he said. \u201cWendouree\u2019s only got three members.<\/p>\n
\u201cLearmonth to Lexton is, I think, under 1000 people so there\u2019s not many people wanting to put their hand up. You\u2019ve got an ageing population, and kids and farmers out here don\u2019t have the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Miners Rest is often the location of the group\u2019s regular community barbecues, which are held there roughly every three months.<\/p>\n
The weekend meet was their first major attempt at recruitment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
