{"id":99889,"date":"2024-02-09T04:58:49","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T17:58:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=99889"},"modified":"2024-02-09T11:36:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T00:36:58","slug":"residents-rally-against-community-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/residents-rally-against-community-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents rally against community crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIVING in Winter Valley until recently, Phil Derbyshire noticed crime was a common occurrence in the growth area.<\/p>\n<p>The issue came close to home for him when the property he was staying was in broken into twice within two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore that, I\u2019d never had a break-in or anything like that, so it was like oh my god, I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s a real thing that actually happens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels so real when it happens to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The incidents prompted Mr Derbyshire to rally residents together to establish an informal neighbourhood watch with the aim of having everyone watch each other\u2019s backs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we all get together and coordinate things with cameras and know who\u2019s up at night to check on things, it\u2019ll make it so much easier to keep tabs on things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since starting the initiative late last month, Mr Derbyshire has developed a list of home security cameras in the region to look over following any incidents, while others have volunteered to conduct regular nighttime patrols.<\/p>\n<p>Watch members are also looking into funding to hire security contractors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99891\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99891 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/02\/New-Estate-Crime-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winter Valley residents are banding together to help prevent crime in the growth area. Photo: BRENDAN McCARTHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A meeting for the neighbourhood watch is being organised, potentially at the Robin Hood Hotel, with the aim of holding meetups every six months afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Derbyshire said he feels collaboration within the community is already making a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is seemingly a bit more hope,\u201d he said. \u201cOn the practical side, it\u2019s much easier now to get information out there for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, we had a Jeep stolen the other day and we could see where it had been. It resulted in a crash and the lady who stole it is caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main concern with the group is that it\u2019s very easy to cross over into dangerous territory in dealing with thieves. Safety is definitely a priority.
