BYRON Community Centre has launched its annual Adopt a Family Christmas Hamper Appeal, calling on locals to support families experiencing hardship this festive season.

The appeal runs from November 1 to December 12 and invites individuals, workplaces and community groups to prepare a hamper valued at about $100.

Each hamper contains gifts, vouchers and non-perishable food items.

Customer service coordinator Renuka Nicail said the appeal reflects the generosity of the region.

“This appeal brings out the best in Byron. Every year, we see people go above and beyond to create something special for a family in need – it’s incredibly moving and truly reflects the spirit of this community,” Nicail said.

Families are identified through Fletcher Street Cottage and food relief service Liberation Larder. Hampers are matched and distributed to families who may otherwise go without.

Relationships manager Bec Robinson said the hampers offer more than practical help.

“The Adopt a Family Christmas Appeal is such a meaningful way for people to give back during the holidays,” she said. “Each hamper is not only a gift, but a message of care, dignity and solidarity with those in our community facing tough times.”

Fletcher Street Cottage manager Damian Farrell said the support can make a difficult time feel more hopeful.

“Christmas can be a heartbreaking time for the local families we support,” he said. “A simple hamper can bring back a sense of hope and help create a moment of joy when it’s needed most, especially for children.”

Those interested in taking part can contact the Byron Community Centre on (02) 6685 6807 or via [email protected] to be matched with a family.

Completed hampers must be delivered to the centre by December 12.

Locals can also write messages of support on the Kindness Tree in the centre foyer from November 24.

Donations to the Fletcher Street Cottage Christmas appeal are also open, funding emergency relief and support services over the holiday season.
