A FEDERAL court has awarded environmental campaign Save Wallum an injunction in the cause’s plight to protect the remaining one per cent of Wallum Heath in the Byron Shire from a proposed housing development.

The campaign, which began in late 2023 to save the remaining one per cent of Wallum Heath in the Byron Shire from housing development, has kept construction works beginning at the site for more than four months.

Greens MLC and founder of the Environmental Defenders Office Sue Higginson said she could not believe how hard the community had worked to stand up to the “environmental injustice and political failure that is the Wallum development”.

“Wonderful people through their connection to Country, culture and each other standing up each day with courage in love is actioning hope.

“An injunction is a significant but interim reprieve.”

Federal Greens candidate Mandy Nolan took the grassroots environmental campaign to federal Parliament, saying she wanted to keep the issue of Wallum alive and speak to federal politicians during her last visit to Canberra.
