TWEED Shire Council will celebrate Local Government Week with a range of activities and tours to highlight the vital role in plays in the region.

The week aims to help move the conversations beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important role council plays as the hub of the community.

Tweed Council will host a range of activities from arts, science and disaster-ready information sessions.

There will be daily activities, tours and meet the council sessions from Monday, August 4 to Sunday, August 10.

“Local Government Week celebrates the range and diversity of services council delivers for the Tweed,” Tweed Shire mayor Chris Cherry

“As the level of government closest to the community, council is best placed to activate healthy local economies and thriving neighbourhoods.”

It is a full week of activities and information tours which highlight the facilities and services around the region.

The community will have the chance to meet the teams working at council and learn more about the 53 service areas it works in.

One of the highlights will be the tour of the Tweed Laboratory Centre where the public can speak with the scientists working there.

It is a state-of-the-art facility offering a wide range of chemical and biological testing for soil and water.

There is a tour of the Uki Water Treatment Plant and guided tours of the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre.

Tweed City Shopping Centre will host photo exhibition showing before and after photos of impacted communities from the 2022 flood.

People can meet some the Community Resilience Teams who will explain how they work with council.

It will highlight the importance of being prepared and how community plays a vital role in protecting their neighbourhoods.
