Council commits to honour hit-and-run victim with safety upgrades
BYRON Shire Council will push for urgent safety upgrades in Bangalow following the hit-and-run death of beloved local Paul ‘Campo’ Campton.
Council staff recently carried out a safety audit at the site, with findings to go before the Transport and Infrastructure Advisory Committee on September 18.
The audit follows a community petition signed by more than 600 people calling for traffic calming, safer intersections and stronger pedestrian protections.
The incident occurred about 3.30am on Sunday July 6 outside Bangalow Community Children’s Centre on Raftons Road.
Petitioners also want a footpath. Council said plans for walkways on Leslie Street and Raftons Road are already drawn up and funding will be sought.

Recommendations in the report include improved signage, lighting and vehicle activated signs. Staff will consult with community groups, including Bangalow Community Children’s Centre and Bangalow Koalas, before changes are made.
Police last week released CCTV of a black SUV seen driving through Bangalow soon after the incident.
The vehicle, believed to be a 2008–2012 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, was captured outside Bangalow General Store travelling north on Granuaille Road.
Investigators believe it may have front-end damage and are urging the driver or passengers to come forward.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Byron Bay Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
