LISMORE City Council is allowing residents to dispose of flood waste for free at the Recycling and Recovery Centre on Wyrallah Road.

The service will remain free until Sunday, March 23, with the possibility of an extension.

Lismore City mayor Steve Krieg said the decision followed damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

“We really dodged a bullet with this one, but there is a lot of damage, including downed trees,” he said.

“Our residents shouldn’t have to bear the cost of this weather event.

“Council will provide free drop-off for waste generated as a consequence of the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, including general waste from flood-affected properties and green waste from storm damage.”

“Council has asked residents to ensure green waste is separated from general waste.

Asbestos waste must be wetted, wrapped in thick plastic, and sealed with tape before being transported to the site.

Loads containing improperly wrapped asbestos will be rejected.

Residents using the facility should expect longer wait times.

The Return and Earn, Lismore Revolve Shop, and Nimbin Transfer Station have reopened.

Kerbside collections have also resumed.

The Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens will remain closed until further notice.
