POLICE are conducting forensic inquiries after human remains were found near the Richmond River in Ballina.

Emergency services responded to the river near Cherry Street about 3.50pm on Monday, February 16, after receiving reports that possible human remains had been discovered.

“Officers attended and located the remains on the northern bank of the river,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

“Police from the Richmond Police District established a crime scene before the remains were transported to Ballina Police Station for further examination.”

A forensic assessment will now be carried out to determine the identity of the deceased.
