A RAFIKI Royale fundraiser at Lennox Head doubled as the first public performance for Australian Idol finalist Bony Onyango since the reality music show wrapped in April, with funds from the event going towards a children’s charity in Kenya.

A capacity crowd filled the Lennox Head Cultural Centre in Las Vegas-themed fancy dress to raise money for Rafiki Mwema.

The charity supports young girls who have been sexually abused and boys living on the street in Kenya.

Onyango, 25, was born and spent his early years in a refugee camp in Kenya. He was working as a traffic controller in Brisbane and is now writing a new catalogue of songs after reaching the top 10 on Australian Idol.

“I love performing and I don’t think we can ever do enough for people in need,” he said.

“It was a different kind of crowd for me and it was just a fantastic event.

“Kenya, that’s home for me, the whole concept of what they’re doing is really special.”

Rafiki Mweme operates a 14-acre self-sufficient farm with several homes and a school for boys and girls.

The organisation started over a decade ago and now employs 45 Kenyan staff and is supported by Australian volunteers.

Another of its programs provides meals to 100 children in town each day.

It was founded by Lennox Head resident Sarah Rosborg with support from locals Claire Harding and Nicci Meredith, who are all still involved.

“I couldn’t believe how much work they’ve done and what sort of impact its having over there,” Onynango said.

“It’s really powerful stuff and the women running it are so cool and inspiring to be around.

“You know straight away from speaking to them how much they care.

“Everyone was in high spirts on the night, if they need me again, I’m there.”
