FORMER chief executive Bill Coulter was officially awarded life membership at Ballina RSL Club after spending 36 years in leadership roles, while steering major upgrades to its facilities.

Coulter, 67, spent almost five decades in the industry with 21 years at chief executive at the club, before retiring late last year.

He oversaw $40 million in development and renovations, with the club a major employer and community hub for region.

“I’m very humbled to have been considered in the context of so many members who have given so much to the club over so many years,” he said.

“Ballina RSL has been such a big part of my life, and I’m honoured by this recognition.”

Coulter worked at clubs in Sydney before joining Ballina RSL in 1987 as the assistant secretary manager.

After a successful period in Brisbane as CEO of Easts Leagues, he returned to Ballina in 2003 where he has been the driving force of the club.

“Bill has been instrumental in shaping Ballina RSL into the strong, community-focused club it is today,” Ballina RSL chairman Darren Murnane said.

“His commitment to responsible leadership, care for staff and members, and unwavering support for local groups has left an enduring mark.”

Beyond his service to the club industry, Coulter has been a long-time advocate for sport and youth development.

He was on the board of Football Far North Coast for many years, where he championed local participation and helped strengthen the region’s football community.

He also led community partnerships with surf lifesaving, veteran and family initiatives, and major local events.

“Bill has been incredibly supportive and open-handed in sharing his knowledge,” Ballina RSL CEO Guy Diven said.

“He leaves the club in a position of real strength, and we are privileged to carry forward the foundations he helped build.”
