THE long-awaited Lismore Cinemas opened this week as crowds flocked to see the latest blockbuster movies in the state-of-the-art venue.

The previous Event Cinemas were destroyed in the 2022 floods and have undergone a multi-million refurbishment after new owner Luke Mackay announced plans for the rebuild in April.

Tradespeople have been working overtime in recent weeks, with the seating and final installations completed before the official opening on December 17.

It has four cinemas with a range of viewing options including reclined seats, daybeds and gourmet food service.

The main cinema has a 16-metre widescreen with laser projection and the latest sound systems.

Mackay is keen to bring the cinema experience back to Lismore, after limited options forced the community to travel as far as Byron and Tweed for a trip to the movies in recent years.

“The goal is to restore the cinema not just as a place to watch films but as a vibrant gathering place for locals of all ages,” he said.

“Every ticket bought, every story shared, every smiling face through the doors, it all helps rebuild this cherished part of Lismore.”

The cinema is one of the last major venues to reopen in Lismore since the floods.

It comes after the Lismore Workers Club started operating again in September 2024.

“The return of Lismore Cinemas is a powerful sign of our city’s strength and renewal,” mayor Steve Krieg said.

“It’s a much-loved venue that will once again serve as a meeting point for friends and families.

“Supporting local jobs and lifting local spirits is exactly what Lismore needs.”
