Mullets and mowers steal the show in Mullumbimby

RECORD crowds turned out for the Mullumbimby Show last weekend, with crowd-pleasing events such as mower racing and a new mullet contest.

Mullumbimby Agricultural Society spokeswoman Sue Walker said around 4,500 people passed through the gates over the course of the three-day event.

“We had our best show back in 2023 after two years off with COVID, but we actually beat that this year,” she said.

“The cattle section had more entries than we’ve ever had, the Pavilion had more entries, the show jumping was up, horse events were up. The bar and barbecue did really well as well.”

While Saturday night’s fireworks were brought forward by about 40 minutes due to the threat of a storm, the rest of the show ran smoothly.

Highlights included a truck show featuring more than 90 trucks from across NSW and Queensland, woodchopping for the first time, and a demolition derby.

The inaugural mullet contest featured entries across four categories — kids, teens, adults and silver fox — showcasing a variety of creative takes on the classic cut.

“It was just a suggestion by a local builder whose son has a mullet and I thought it was a great idea,” Walker said.

Money raised from ticket sales will go towards paying for entertainment and next year’s event. Donations will also be made to local community groups, including Brunswick Mullumbimby Lions Club, The Rotary Club of Mullumbimby and the Rural Fire Service, as well as local schools and sporting groups.

Walker said organisers were pleased with the event’s success.”People just like that good, old-fashioned country fun,” she said.
