A NEW access ramp and a series of upgrades have been completed at Lighthouse Beach to improve access for people with disability and emergency services.
The $400,00 project included the construction of a concrete ramp with stainless steel handrails, a tactile surface, and an extension of the existing emergency vehicle access ramp.
Other works included a new concrete block retaining wall and stairs leading to the relocated beach showers.
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project had been a long-term goal for council and was an important step in making the coastline more accessible.
“It provides safer access for everyone and improves emergency access for our local services,” she said.
“It’s about making sure everyone, regardless of age or ability, can experience and enjoy our beautiful beaches.”
The project received joint funding from the state and federal Community Assets Program under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The funding supports the recovery of local infrastructure damaged during the floods in February and June 2022.
Richmond MP Justine Elliot said the upgrades showed the government’s commitment to building resilient community infrastructure.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the work would have a lasting impact.
“This project is about more than access. It’s about restoring community infrastructure that was damaged by severe weather and making it stronger and more inclusive for the future,” she said.
“These upgrades make a real difference in people’s everyday lives, whether you’re visiting the beach, supporting someone with mobility needs or responding to an emergency.”
