New CCTV equipment to boost community safety

TWEED Shire Council recently purchased two mobile Closed-Circuit Television trailers and three semi-fixed systems (pole-mounted cameras) using State Government election commitment grant funding.

The mobile CCTV units assist in crime prevention, protect public assets, prevent antisocial behaviour, encourage public safety, and help protect the environment.

The new mobile CCTV equipment will be available for the Council to deploy within the next few months.

A Question on Notice from Councillor Rhiannon Brinsmead in the July council meeting requested the current status of CCTV in the Tweed Shire. The acting Director of Corporate Services said the updated CCTV in Public Places Policy was available on the Tweed Council website and that Tweed Council operates several CCTV systems within the Tweed to increase safety for residents, businesses and tourists.

Cameras are located across Kingscliff, Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads South and include Murwillumbah CBD, Kingscliff CBD and Tweed Heads South Skate Park.

In addition to CCTV in public places, other cameras are in place for flood monitoring, asset protection, and operational use, such as at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre.

The council regularly maintains all cameras and recording systems and uses the same technology deployed at the new Tweed Valley Hospital.
