New permanent roundabout for key intersection
The project includes concrete kerb and medians, asphalt pavement, and a shared path connection for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as pedestrian refuges, new line marking and signage and additional street lighting.
Ballina Shire Council Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project was critical in supporting the growing community and motorist safety.
“Byron Bay Road is an arterial route, and the T-intersection at Byron Street has become increasingly congested and hazardous over recent years,” Cadwallader said.
“As our community continues to expand, it is vital we invest in infrastructure that not only meets current needs but also ensures the safety of all residents.
“The new roundabout will improve traffic flow, but more importantly, it will provide a safer commute for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” she said.
The $1.53 million project is funded through the Australian Government Black Spot Program.
“This funding will allow us to install a roundabout in a key location that will directly benefit the safety and efficiency of our road network,” Cadwallader said.
“This project is a testament to our ongoing commitment to enhance the quality of life in our community through strategic infrastructure investments.”
Motorists can expect some delays, although no full road closures. Traffic control will be in place from 7 am to 6 pm from Monday to Friday, with the speed limit reduced to 40 km/h. Some nightwork may be required.
Work will continue to the end of June, weather and site conditions permitting.
