THE village of Tumbulgum was a hive of activity last week when cranes positioned 22 new school building modules onsite at Tumbulgum Public School.

Staff and students watched the delivery of modules manufactured off-site for rapid onsite assembly, which will fast-track the school’s new library, administration area and classrooms.

The elevated and flood-resilient school will also include a new canteen, outdoor landscaping, and a playground.

Acting NSW Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said the new school was specially designed for flood resilience.

“Giving students, teachers, and the community confidence that learning can continue no matter what challenges arise,” Houssos said.

Minister for Recovery and the North Coast, Janelle Saffin, said it had been fantastic to share in the students’ excitement.

“Rebuilding schools like Tumbulgum is a central part of the recovery work we are doing to create more resilient communities following the 2022 floods,” Saffin said.

In addition, the project includes restoring the old school bell and incorporating pieces of the school’s signage and plaques to ensure the history remains part of the school’s future.

Tumbulgum Public School’s relieving principal, Genevieve Esgate, said she was thrilled to see the new school buildings coming together.

“Our students are buzzing with excitement and curiosity as their future classrooms are assembled,” she said.

“We are eagerly looking forward to moving into our new buildings later this year.”

Since 2022, 16 flood-damaged schools have been repaired or rebuilt in the region, with construction underway at Condong and South Lismore.
