THE NSW State Emergency Service is warning Northern Rivers residents to prepare for an increased risk of severe weather as the 2025-26 storm season begins.
NSW SES Northeastern Zone Commander, Chief Superintendent Kris McDonald, said simple steps at home could reduce risks.
“I urge everyone to take simple steps to prepare their homes and protect their families,” McDonald said.
“Have a home emergency plan and kit, clean your gutters and drains, secure loose items, trim trees and branches that could fall, and consider your pets.”
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a wetter-than-usual spring, with above-average rainfall expected across much of NSW following a wet winter.
Manager of hazard preparedness and response Steve Bernasconi said riverine flood risk remained high.
“There is an increased chance of unusually high rainfall for many areas,” Bernasconi said.
“The wet winter means riverine flood risk remains high into spring.
As we move into the warmer seasons, more rain and heat mean a greater chance of thunderstorms.”
Last storm season, the NSW SES Northeastern Zone responded to more than 5,800 storm-related incidents, including 1,693 in Tweed Heads and 1,016 in Mullumbimby.
