THE Northern Rivers has dominated the shortlist for the 2025 Spa & Wellness International Awards, highlighting the region’s standing as Australia’s original wellness destination.

Gaia Retreat & Spa has been named a finalist in the Best Wellness Resort or Retreat category and also recognised in Wellness Cuisine for its locally sourced menus.

Other Northern Rivers contenders include Native State in Tweed and beauty brands Retreatment Botanics and Synthesis Organics, which are finalists in spa skin care categories.

Byron Bay consultant Judy Chapman has also been shortlisted for Best Wellness Consultant.

Eden Health Retreat and Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, while outside the immediate Northern Rivers, also feature strongly in categories including Integrated Wellness Retreat and Wellness Cuisine.

Kris Abbey, founder of the Asia Pacific Wellness Summit and The Spa & Wellness Awards, said the region’s representation reflects its long history of innovation and authenticity.

“The Northern Rivers has always been a magnet for wellness,” she said.

“From Byron Bay, often regarded as Australia’s original wellness destination, to the hinterland retreats and healing centres dotted throughout the region, there is an abundance of talent, innovation and authenticity that is unmatched. It is no surprise so many organisations from here are being recognised.”

She said the awards celebrate operators who not only elevate the industry but also enrich their communities.

“The Northern Rivers is more than just a destination, it is a feeling,” she said.

Winners will be announced on 18 October at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, as part of the 2025 Wellness Summit.
