BALLINA Shire Council has launched film screenings and online workshops as part of its commitment to reduce waste and plan for a sustainable future as part of its Plastic Free July initiative.
The online workshop with Mardi Lee focused on swapping chemicals for eco-friendly cleaning solutions.
There was also a free screening of Ocean with David Attenborough at the Lennox Head Cultural Centre.
The film highlights the impact of industrial fishing and the benefits of marine protected areas.
The council’s resource recovery education officer, Justine Rowe, said the film calls on communities to reduce plastic waste and protect the natural environment.
“Our shire’s coastline is world-class, and the ocean connects us all,” she said.
“Plastic Free July is an important reminder that we can all play a role in protecting our environment.
“By taking simple steps, like refusing single-use plastics such as takeaway coffee cups, drink bottles or plastic-wrapped produce, we can help reduce plastic pollution.
“These small changes, especially when taken together as a community, can lead to long-lasting habits and a more sustainable future for everyone.”
The council now offers plastic-free party kits from its libraries at Alstonville, Ballina or Lennox Head Libraries.
Each kit contains colourful cups, plates, bowls, forks, spoons and a jug that can be borrowed for people wanting to host an event.
Residents can also sign up for the plastic-free challenge where they can make donations and document their single-use progress across social media.
