A LOCAL Condong resident has rescued a native ringtail possum family that sought shelter at her house during Sunday’s deluge.

The bedraggled mother and two babies were huddled at the home’s backdoor.

After calling WIRES without success, placing the scared and sodden animals in a basket, and feeding them chopped apples, the resident sought further assistance on social media.

Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers (TVWC) responded.

“Thankfully, our dedicated rescuer Ivor was not far away,” a spokesperson for TVWC said.

“With the floods closing in and roads becoming impassable, every second counted.

“Ivor carefully gathered this precious family and ensured they were safely transported to one of our experienced wildlife carers.

“Today, this beautiful possum family is safe, warm, and well-fed, resting until they can return to the wild once the waters recede,” they said.

The TVWC is part of the Northern Rivers Wildlife Network and coordinates wildlife response during weather crises.

“Together, we are focused on rescuing and rehabilitating affected animals, but we need your help,” they said.

The organisation is encouraging anyone wanting to help endangered wildlife to visit its website for information and consider donating to its GoFundMe campaign.

“Your donation will directly support emergency veterinary care for injured wildlife, urgent medical supplies for wounds and illness and emergency food and housing for displaced animals,” the wildlife rescue charity said.
