MURWILLUMBAH’S Regent Cinema is being renovated to restore the heritage art-deco theatre and reopen it as a community-focused venue.
Proprietor Troy Stanley, who also runs the M|Arts Cafe & Bar, said taking over the cinema had been a long time in the planning.
“I actually tried to purchase the Regent in March last year,” Stanley said.
“When I heard the phrase ‘fire sale’, I knew for sure it would never be a cinema again and for me, that was really important.”
Stanley said the cinema will offer $10 tickets for all films and a free cinema day once a month, as well as partnering with the Murwillumbah Theatre Company.
Renovations over the next two months will include upgraded decor, technical equipment, a new bar and local food offerings.
“This building has so much history in it,” Stanley said.
“We want to hear from anyone with ideas, thoughts, feelings – let us know what you want to see, what you want to run here – it will be a space for the whole community.”
