Shark feeding frenzy stuns beach crowds as surfer joins the chaos
SHOCKED crowds gathered to watch dozens of sharks in a frenzy feeding at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast.
When footage emerged online, many people thought the content was made by artificial intelligence.
But several eyewitnesses confirmed to the Times the footage was real.
Amidst the chaos, one daredevil surfer took to the water for a stunt, while others gathered on the beach.
Hundreds of surfers and people across the Tweed and Gold Coast took to Instagram to comment on the “once in a lifetime” footage.
“Good feed for the men in grey suits,” former professional surfer Bede Durbidge said.
“Stronger wind and some more rain we could be looking at a Sharknado scenario,” another user said.
The sharks were lured close to shore by a large bait ball, which saw some fishermen get close to the action.
Bait balls are dense schools of small fish that form a spherical defence formation.
They attract several predators, but it is rare to see one so close to shore.
The last fatal shark attack on the Gold Coast was at Greenmount in 2020.
Snapper Rocks usually hosts a World Surf League event each year, but the 2025 event was moved north to Burleigh Heads due to sandbank concerns following Cyclone Alfred.
Swimmers and beachgoers are reminded to use caution when returning to the beach.
