The Implications of Banning Gambling Ads in NSW

Ads in general are a major source of funding for several establishments. This ban will have negative effects on NSW’s transport economy as there will be an inevitable reduction in revenue.

The government of New South Wales has moved to ban gambling ads across all forms of public transportation. According to Minister of Transport Jo Haylen, there is a need to control and manage the popularity and appeal of gambling.

The argument is that the less gambling is publicized, the less people are influenced to participate and this in turn will help tone down any gambling-related challenges the state faces.

Whether this is true or not is highly debatable but one thing everyone can agree on is that banning gambling ads will have a negative economic impact on various stakeholders. It will also reshape the Australian gambling landscape and not necessarily for the better.

This approach, however, is not in the best interest of gambling platforms and online betting companies. Adverts are a major way through which they create awareness about their business and also draw customers in to play their games.

Such restrictions will reduce their visibility, hamper their operations, and cause them to find other ways to reach and connect with their target customers. Players might even resort to international gambling websites that operate outside of Australian regulations.

A foreign gaming platform becomes particularly attractive if, in addition to being free from Australian regulators, it pays the quickest, offers more flexible payout options such as the use of cryptocurrencies, and offers a wide variety of games.

However, this shift to non-Australian regulated platforms will make it very difficult for the government to monitor gambling practices and will ultimately defeat the purpose of the ban since foreign platforms can advertise directly to their targets online.

Ads in general are a major source of funding for several establishments. This ban will have negative effects on NSW’s transport economy as there will be an inevitable reduction in revenue.

According to a recent report on the gross value added (GVA) of tourism in Australia, casinos and other gambling activities contributed about 400 million Australian dollars to the economy in 2024. With NSW being a leading gambling destination, banning these ads will likely cause a decline in the GVA of the sector in 2025.

Consumer behaviour will also likely change due to the ban. While some gamblers may reduce their betting activity because of decreased exposure, others may seek alternative ways to engage in gambling, such as through social media, private online communities, or online casinos.

Although it is just a transport ad ban, some believe this could lead the way to a complete ad ban. This is similar to the approach cigarette companies had to endure due to smoking and tobacco laws

As a result, smoking rates have significantly dropped in Australia. This is what Minister Haylen is hoping for with gambling.

However, some advocates for responsible gambling suggest ads should come with warnings about the dangers of irresponsible gambling instead of a total transport ad ban. And, that the use of celebrities and influencers in gambling promotions should be restricted.

While the government seeks to protect its citizens, it also has to consider the economic impact it would have on businesses that depend on ads to stay alive. But for now, it has taken the tough decision to push for this bad.
