UPGRADES at a popular sport and recreation spot at Caniaba will help transform the space into a new multi-purpose facility.

The main works include a durable acrylic surface on the tennis courts to make it suitable for basketball and pickleball.

Pickleball is increasing in popularity across the region, while there will also be two new overhead cricket nets.

The changes are being made after Lismore City Council held a community feedback session at the facility in June.

In its report, council said the feedback had shaped the work, particularly for the cricketers who had been having to use the tennis courts for training.

The facility is a hub for cricket with its main oval and pavilion named after Lismore cricket legend Adam Gilchrist.

“Throughout the consultation period, we received valuable insights from community members, both through online surveys and at our in-person event,” the report said.

“This feedback has played a crucial role in shaping the future of the facilities to better serve the diverse needs of our community.

“We’re excited to transform the space into a versatile and inclusive environment for everyone.”

The next phase of the project will focus on the relocation of the children’s playground to the basketball court.

It will include seating and a wider variety of play options.

The second part of the project is still in the design phase and awaiting funding.

Initial work is expected to be completed by June 30.
