TWEED Shire Council is calling on the community to nominate local legends for the 2025 Australia Day Awards.

Nominations are now open for the annual awards, which recognise individuals and groups for their outstanding contributions in the community.

The nine awards across seven categories include Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year (individual and group), Sporting Achievement (individual and group), Arts and Culture, Community Event of the Year, Young Achiever in Community Service and Senior Ambassador.

Tweed Shire mayor Chris Cherry said the awards were a reminder that every great community is built on the quiet efforts of its people.

“You don’t need to be an Olympian to be nominated. Small actions can have a big impact,” she said.

“These awards are about recognising the everyday people who make our community stronger through their cultural, volunteer and sporting efforts.

“A simple nomination can be a powerful way to say thank you and well done.”

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday, January 23, alongside the council’s citizenship celebrations.

Nominations close at 4.30pm on Friday, October 10.
