World’s Greatest Shave all year round
MURWILLUMBAH teen Mahalia Ashforth has shaved her long locks to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, raising funds for cancer patients and vital research into blood cancers.
While the main event is held each March, the foundation encourages year-round participation. Mahalia embraced the opportunity, shaving her hair last week to kickstart her fundraising efforts.
“It’s always a bit scary to shave your hair at any time, but it made sense to do it now and kickstart some fundraising heading into summer,” she said.
“The need for support is year-round, not just one day.”
Since its inception in 1998, the World’s Greatest Shave has become one of Australia’s most prominent fundraising campaigns. Formerly known as Shave for a Cure, it has raised over $300 million to help people facing blood cancer, with funds directed towards research and support services.
The Leukaemia Foundation reports that over 53 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer every day, with a mission to see zero lives lost to the disease by 2035.
For Mahalia, the cause is deeply personal. “My family has a history with a few types of cancer. In fact, all the women – my mum, aunt, grandma and great aunt are all cancer survivors.
“This seemed like an easy, small way I could contribute to something that is important to me.”
Most long-haired participants donate the clipped hair to the foundation to be made into wigs for cancer patients. The scheme also accepts short hair clippings to be made into compost and floating hair booms – an effective solution to absorbing oil spills in waterways.
The 19-year-old Mt St Pat’s 2023 graduate hopes to exceed her fundraising goal and said it had been a great experience. At the time of writing, her campaign had reached $1411.
“The hair thing has been pretty liberating, but it was also so heartwarming to see the community around me rally to support the cause,” she said.
