THE owners of Mullumbimby’s beloved ‘Yellow Church’ — a local landmark that has housed a yoga studio for nearly 30 years — have put the historic building up for sale.

Originally built in 1903 in the heart of town on Stuart Street, the church was purchased by Robyn and Dave Sweaney in 1996 when it could no longer accommodate the needs of the local Presbyterian community.

They relocated it to its current home on Myocum Street and renovated.

The property was later acquired by Diana Ewing, who undertook further refurbishments and began teaching yoga there.

Eight years ago, Victoria Parsons and Meagan Hayward, who had become friends through yoga, discovered the church was for sale.

Captivated by its character — including a bell tower, stained glass arch windows, pressed metal ceiling roses and teak floors — they decided to purchase it together.

In the years since, the church has hosted regular yoga, Pilates and meditation classes, along with music events, healing sessions and singing workshops.

Hayward, who lives in the self-contained space at the rear of the building, said the decision to sell was not made lightly.

“The church has been a large part of my life for so long as I was a hatha student for many years with the previous owner before experiencing Iyengar yoga and becoming a teacher,” she said.

Parsons said she hoped the new owner would preserve the church’s legacy and continue to use it as a space for community wellbeing.

“We have decided to sell because we have come to a place where we need to move on and Meagan is leaving the Shire,” she said. “As I am 20 years older than Meagan it is time for me to let go of this commitment and responsibility.”

It is being marketed by real estate agent Karin Heller from Kim Jones and Co., with a price guide of $950,000.
