AFL Nines is set to bring fast-paced footy action, offering winning teams a chance to take home $3,000 after the two-day carnival is played at Byron Bay.
About 300 competitors will take part across five divisions at the Cavanbah Centre on October 24-25.
The event first started in 2014 and had included former AFL players over the years including Jude Bolton, Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt and Steve Johnson.
Teams from Victoria have also qualified through the AFL Schools program.
AFL executive general manager of game development Rob Auld said AFL Nines at Byron is a popular event.
“Since this concept and tournament was created by our team in AFL Queensland back in 2014, AFL Nines at Byron has continued to grow into a fun filled weekend for participants, locals and the footy community,” Auld said.
“We’re proud to have this competition under our AFL Play brand as a national event which highlights Nines’ increasing popularity across the country

“The format of AFL Nines allows more people to connect with our game as we strive to have footy in every home across Australia.
“It’s inclusive, welcoming and suited to different age groups, ability and experience.”
There will additional local interest this year after the formation of the men’s social competition which was played on the Northern Rivers for the first time.
The six-week competition included teams from Ballina, Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Lismore.
It was played under modified rules and aimed to attract new players to the sport who could also adapt to the Nines’ format.
“The nine-a-side game provides a fast, free-flowing game to players seeking a social, non-contact alternative that is fun for all ages, genders and skill-levels, and is played on a smaller field,” event organiser Brad Howard said.
“The whole vibe of the weekend is always so much fun.
“Whether you’re an experienced AFL Niner or just looking for a fun weekend with mates, there’s divisions to suit all abilities.”
