Moonshiners rugby club raises thousands to support men’s mental health in the region

THE Mullumbimby Moonshiners’ annual Beyond Blue Charity Day brought the community together for a day of rugby while raising thousands to support local men’s mental health.

Now in its 10th year, the event has grown to include the club’s under-18, women’s and men’s teams who compete in the Far North Coast rugby union competition.

Players from each team wore specially designed Beyond Blue jerseys, which were auctioned after their matches, while local businesses donated prizes for the major raffle at Alby Lofts Oval, Brunswick Heads.

Mullumbimby rugby club women’s team manager Karly Jenkins said the day remained one of the club’s most important events.

“One of our Moonshiner players lost their life to mental health, and our small community has really shown up for this day, which continues to get bigger and better,” she said.

“Over the years, we’ve all been touched by those impacted by mental health so it’s important to make sure this event is a success, and to be there for our mates.”

Jenkins, who also manages Reflections Ferry Reserve in Brunswick Heads, volunteered alongside fellow club members to organise the event.

Her husband, Keelan, has been involved with the Moonshiners since he was 15 and has seen the club grow in recent years with the addition of its under-18 and women’s teams.

Reflections, a sponsor of the Moonshiners, backed Jenkins to run the event and supported the fundraiser as part of its commitment to helping regional communities.

“We’re grateful to have such passionate team members who show up for their communities in all sorts of ways,” chief executive Nick Baker said.

“They volunteer to help events like these get off the ground, raising money for important causes and being the glue that connects community.”
