{"id":100707,"date":"2024-08-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=100707"},"modified":"2024-08-03T08:40:51","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T22:40:51","slug":"northern-rivers-nurse-provides-vital-aid-in-haiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/living\/northern-rivers-nurse-provides-vital-aid-in-haiti\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern rivers nurse provides vital aid in Haiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CABARITA nurse Brian Moller has spent the past two decades on the front lines of some of the world&#8217;s most dangerous conflict zones, providing critical medical care where it&#8217;s needed most.<\/p>\n<p>From Afghanistan to Syria, Moller has been there.<\/p>\n<p>He was part of the crisis management team in the days following the terrorist attack on the M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res\/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF) maternity hospital in Afghanistan and was in Kabul during the Taliban takeover.<\/p>\n<p>He has faced countless other crises during his time with MSF.<\/p>\n<p>Now stationed in Haiti, Moller continues his life-saving work amid the country&#8217;s ongoing turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty tense here, quite catastrophic,&#8221; Moller said from Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/MSB155917High_02806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MSF team in Haiti proceeds with the first medical check before redirecting the patients to the relevant department. Photo: ALEXANDRE MARCOU\/MSF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our hospitals are full, and we are dealing with open armed conflict between armed organised criminal groups, neighbourhood militias, and the Haitian national police.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The health system is completely destroyed, and there&#8217;s only one semi-functioning public hospital left in the city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moller&#8217;s work with MSF has taken him to Libya, Yemen, South Sudan, DRC, Uganda, Pakistan, Palestine, Chad, Nigeria, and Liberia.<\/p>\n<p>He is a nurse by training but has been working as head of mission and deputy head of mission for MSF and has done 21 assignments with MSF to date.<\/p>\n<p>It all started in Adelaide, where he was working as a critical care nurse with certifications in paediatrics, interventional angiography, and anaesthesia.<\/p>\n<p>Moller moved to the Northern Rivers, and after 12 years, he found himself yearning for a different kind of engagement with patients, which led him to M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I realised I could be engaging with patients in a different way,&#8221; Moller said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/MSB191472High_02925.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Armed men exchange gunfire with police forces in the Bel Air neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince. Photo: CORENTIN FOHLEN\/DIVERGENCE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t that I was bored; I just wanted to contribute more directly to those in need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moller&#8217;s first assignment was in Monrovia, Liberia, post-conflict.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were in an old school building, handling post-conflict surgery and medical inpatient care,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>After returning to Adelaide Children&#8217;s Hospital, he soon felt restless and began seeking more assignments.<\/p>\n<p>His next assignment took him to Nigeria, working in surgical intensive care and the emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>This second assignment solidified his decision to leave public health in Australia and commit full-time to M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res, where he felt he could make the maximum impact.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Moller has worked in Syria, Libya, and Tunisia, tackling various crises, including protection for illegal immigrants and conflict-related medical care.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent assignment brought him to Haiti, where the situation is dire.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/MSB191467High_02945.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of the Delmas 18 neighborhood in Port-au-Prince after clashes between armed groups and the police forces. Photo: CORENTIN FOHLEN\/DIVERGENCE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a catastrophic situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;About 600,000 people are sheltering in schools, churches, and empty buildings with no access to water, sanitation, or healthcare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the immense challenges, Moller and his team continue their work, providing critical medical care in emergency rooms and a 75-bed surgical hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We treat trauma from violence, road traffic accidents, and industrial accidents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very difficult to move around due to the fighting, and referral pathways have been destroyed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The work is not without personal risk and stress.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;For the national staff living in affected communities, even getting to and from work is a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s stressful work under duress,&#8221; Moller said.<\/p>\n<p>Awareness of the conflict in Haiti is minimal in Australia, a situation Moller hopes to change.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/MSB191501High_02885.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jean, a patient who was shot, is now receiving physiotherapy at the MSF hospital in Tabarre.
