{"id":101278,"date":"2024-08-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=101278"},"modified":"2024-08-28T18:59:56","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T08:59:56","slug":"nature-based-tourism-surges-in-northern-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/nature-based-tourism-surges-in-northern-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Nature-based tourism surges in Northern Rivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Northern Rivers region is primed to benefit from a boom in nature-based tourism, with new research showing visitors increasingly want to connect with Australia&#8217;s natural and cultural assets.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in nature-based activities among Australians grew by 47 per cent from 2014 to 2023, according to Tourism Research Australia&#8217;s latest National Visitor Survey.<\/p>\n<p>The report said tourism businesses could capitalise on the rise in demand by investing in or partnering with other operators or stakeholders to grow nature-based experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting botanic or public gardens grew by 85 per cent, bushwalking and rainforest walks by 81 per cent and visiting national or state parks increased by 73 per cent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101951\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-101951\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/WendyBithellfromVisi_77972.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wendy Bithell from Vision Walks with Tiffany Demal and Cassandra Cailliau at Victoria Park Nature Reserve in Dalwood. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cycling also grew by 53 per cent, placing the area in a good position with the development of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a 46 per cent rise in people visiting wildlife parks, zoos and aquariums, while whale and dolphin watching rose by 26 per cent and visiting farms increased by 12 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Eco-tourism operator Wendy Bithell, from Byron Bay-based Vision Walks, said the Northern Rivers region was a diversity hotspot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though we have destroyed most of our bush scrub the little pockets that are left are stunning and packed full of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bithell, who is also on the board of local tourism association Destination Byron, runs tours to see native animals such as platypus, koalas and other wildlife.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/08\/WendyBithellfromVisi_82023.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wendy Bithell from Vision Walks with Tiffany Damal and Cassandra Cailliau at Victoria Park Nature Reserve in Dalwood.
