{"id":102148,"date":"2024-10-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=102148"},"modified":"2024-10-02T16:22:54","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T06:22:54","slug":"help-us-reach-new-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/help-us-reach-new-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Help us reach new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CLIMBING Jungle is appealing to the community to support a development application that will save the much-loved facility at West Ballina.<\/p>\n<p>The property&#8217;s owner, Sydney-based stunt coordinator Harry Dakanalis, plans to spend $1 million to upgrade the site after discovering it wasn&#8217;t compliant when it was built in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was going to shut it down and then I went up there and had a look at how it was running and saw the families there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was quite an eye opener for me to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s quite a unique building and very rare that you find a gym of that calibre \u2014 it&#8217;s one of the tallest climbing gyms in the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/ClimbingJungleBallin_33548.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Climbing Jungle at West Ballina. Photo SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I decided to complete the DA and find somebody to run the gym and keep it in place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be a crime to knock it down and put a mechanical workshop in the property.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dakanalis bought the property, which fronts Emigrant Creek, as an investment in 2019, when he was in the area working on the Nicole Kidman film Nine Perfect Strangers.<\/p>\n<p>When a former tenant wanted to build the gym, he gave him his blessing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/ClimbingJungleWestBa_35347.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Climbing Jungle at West Ballina. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The indoor centre features 650 square metres of climbing walls and a bouldering wall and is popular for kids&#8217; birthday parties and school holiday activities.<\/p>\n<p>When he discovered it wasn&#8217;t compliant in 2023, Dakanalis approached Ballina Shire Council to find out what he needed to do.<\/p>\n<p>The DA includes widening the road out the front, creating 15 parking spaces, building a new entry and a staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Council has received more than 50 emails from people who use the facility supporting the plan so far.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/KidsatClimbingJungle_39072.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kids at Climbing Jungle Ballina.
