{"id":102800,"date":"2024-11-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=102800"},"modified":"2024-10-30T17:25:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T06:25:33","slug":"chess-on-wheels-comes-to-the-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/chess-on-wheels-comes-to-the-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"Chess on wheels comes to the Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BYRON Bay Cycle Club&#8217;s Summer Set of criterium races will kick off on November 3, bringing high-speed cycling to the Cavanbah Centre<\/p>\n<p>Three events will be held in November and December and are open to cyclists of all ages and abilities who hold a race licence.<\/p>\n<p>The events are run over a short course at the Cavanbah Centre, where riders will race for 40 minutes before bringing it home for the final three laps.<\/p>\n<p>Club secretary Mat Johnson described criterium racing as &#8220;chess on wheels&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very tactical, there&#8217;s a lot of strategy involved,&#8221; Mr Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>It was about playing to your strengths as a rider and knowing who you were racing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t, it&#8217;s just going to be the strongest rider wins. You have to use tactics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Past events run by the club have attracted up to 50 cyclists from the Northern Rivers, Grafton and the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/BBcycling_92753.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riders of all ages and abilities can enter eht Summer Set series that starts in Byron Bay this weekend. Photo SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged female and junior cyclists to enter. And for those new to the format, they are offering a chaperone \u2013 a more experienced rider to share their knowledge to help navigate the race.<\/p>\n<p>Criterium racing can look daunting, Mr Johnson said, but there are rules and etiquette that riders follow to ensure safety.<\/p>\n<p>The track is mostly oval-shaped with a few kinks that test riders&#8217; cornering skills. It&#8217;s a flat track on smooth, fast bitumen but is subject to some changing wind conditions that will challenge riders, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Spectators are encouraged, as are those who want to find out more about cycle racing and the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Criterium racing is very fast-paced. It&#8217;s visceral \u2013 it allows spectators to get right next to the track and feel the speed and the action as the riders go past,&#8221; Mr Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>Race two is on November 24 and race three on December 8.
