{"id":103005,"date":"2024-11-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=103005"},"modified":"2024-11-13T16:47:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T05:47:01","slug":"the-little-swim-club-punching-above-its-weight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/the-little-swim-club-punching-above-its-weight\/","title":{"rendered":"The little swim club punching above its weight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE Workers Swim Team was set to host its first carnival in two years this weekend, buoyed by the support of the community and past members.<\/p>\n<p>Club president Gary Dardengo said it had been a challenging time for the club, its numbers hit hard by the pandemic and floods that destroyed the Baths.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Competitive swimmers needed water to train in. We lost them to Alstonville and Casino &#8211; which was a great advantage to those two clubs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But now we&#8217;re back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The once-strong club is slowly rebuilding its numbers. Dardengo said he is overwhelmed by the support they have received from retired members and the community to help host the carnival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/image4_45450.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"580\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the Lismroe Workers Swim Team. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s heartening,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They are full of enthusiasm and passion. They are striving to do whatever they can (to hold the carnival). I love being a part of this club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From my point of view as the club president, I believe our club is punching above its weight, it&#8217;s just incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The carnival was a late addition to the North Coast Swim calendar, as the club had to wait for a boom to be installed at the Baths to hold an official meet.<\/p>\n<p>Dardengo said it meant some swimmers may already have a full schedule, but the club was edging closer to their goal of 100 entries.<\/p>\n<p>The carnival is a qualifying event for state and national titles, so it offered swimmers another opportunity to improve their times for selection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/image2_45438.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Lismore Workers Swim Team will compete in the Lismore Swim Carnival on November 16. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members of NSW Swim are eligible to enter the carnival that will stage races from 25m to 400m across all swim strokes. The competition is open for ages 7 and up.<\/p>\n<p>Dardengo thanked the Lismore business community that had supported the club with raffle items for the carnival.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is amazing and heartfelt how many Lismore businesses have given something even though they have been through the floods too,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dardengo said the Lismore Workers Swim Team was the only swimming club left in Lismore and new members are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>They can contact the club via Facebook direct message to make inquiries.<\/p>\n<p>The Lismore Swim Carnival is on tomorrow (Saturday, November 16) at the Lismore Memorial Baths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE Workers Swim Team was set to host its first carnival in two years this weekend, buoyed by the support of the community and past members.
