{"id":103196,"date":"2024-11-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=103196"},"modified":"2024-11-20T20:15:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T09:15:12","slug":"rowing-is-life-long-at-murwillumbah-regatta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/rowing-is-life-long-at-murwillumbah-regatta\/","title":{"rendered":"Rowing is life long at Murwillumbah regatta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE first Murwillumbah regatta in five years went off without a hitch at Murwillumbah Rowing Club (MRC) last Sunday, November 17.<\/p>\n<p>The event included 45 races of 100 competitors, and 200 crew entries represented record-breaking participation.<\/p>\n<p>Junior and senior competitors outnumbered the masters&#8217; participants, and the masters&#8217; races resulted in some of the closest finishes. One highlight was a maiden win by husband-and-wife crew Michael and Jan Mills in the Masters Mixed Double Sculls event.<\/p>\n<p>After their 0.2 second-win, Jan Mills said she&#8217;d never rowed so hard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve not heard Michael &#8216;Millsy&#8217; speechless for so long after any race,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/rowing3_34101.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"914\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 200 entries across all grades made the regatta an exciting event for all generations. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Murwillumbah Rowing Club president Robert Gee said the event was highly successful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was fabulous to see the riverbanks lined with boats and many exciting and close races,&#8221; Gee said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With competitors aged between 14 and 90, the regatta showed that<\/p>\n<p>rowing is a lifelong sport in the Northern Rivers and Southern Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following the period of disruption after COVID and the floods, schools and clubs are rebuilding well,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Centenary Rowing Club member and regatta participant Kerry Tickle thanked the organisers for the successful event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/rowing1_34106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stunning Murwillumbah backdrop of the Tweed River hosted the first regatta in five years. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of everyone at Centenary Rowing Club, I wanted to thank everyone for a really fantastic event,&#8221; Tickle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our kids and a couple of masters had a great day. I loved that it gave us the opportunity to get a few of our younger novice rowers out for their first-ever race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was a Tweed rower many years ago, so it makes me so happy and very nostalgic to have the kids I coach row down in that neck of the woods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I dream of moving back down there as soon as my kids are off my hands.
