THE long-awaited upgrade of South Beach Rd at Brunswick Heads is set to begin in early February, after the summer school holidays.<\/p>\n

The work is expected to take around six months and should be complete by September.<\/p>\n

Sections of South Beach Rd and the car park will be temporarily closed during construction, with traffic reduced to one lane at times.<\/p>\n

The $2.7 million project includes resurfacing the road, which runs parallel to Main Beach, along with new drainage and improvements to the existing drainage, kerb and gutter works and line marking.<\/p>\n

The car park at Torakina Beach will also be resurfaced, and the line markings and parking spaces will be redesigned in a bid to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.<\/p>\n

Byron Shire Council\u2019s director of infrastructure services Phil Holloway said the popular beachside road has been in poor condition for a long time and his team was excited to have a firm timeframe for the works.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis road is the primary access point to the beach, the Brunswick River, the south wall, the upgraded surf club when it is built, the community centre and tennis courts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Byron Shire Council contributed $1.2 million towards the project, while the NSW Government provided more than $1 million in funding.<\/p>\n

The remaining $500,000 came from the Federal Government\u2019s Roads to Recovery program.<\/p>\n

While the planned works do not include the resurfacing of South Beach Ln, which runs off South Beach Rd alongside Simpsons Creek, Council plans to seek funding for road and drainage upgrades in future financial years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
