CLEAN Up Australia Day is loess than 10 days away (Sunday, March 2), and Tweed Shire Council is inviting the community to join in to make a difference in protecting the Tweed lands and waterways.<\/p>\n

Registering for the 36th annual clean-up event is an opportunity for residents, schools, and community groups to come together to take action.<\/p>\n

In 2024, around 700 community members were involved in local clean-ups across the Tweed. They comprised 50 registered groups including a group of 40 divers who removed rubbish from the Tweed River at Fingal Head boat ramp.<\/p>\n

Collectively, volunteers removed more than two tonnes of waste.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tweed Council’s Resource Recovery Officer Yvette van Amstel said signing up was simple, and the Council hoped to boost volunteer numbers.<\/p>\n

“Clean Up Australia Day is about taking practical action to clear up the litter and waste that finds its way into our precious waterways and other natural surroundings,” Ms van Amstel said.<\/p>\n

“Everyone who gets involved tells us how rewarding the day is and how it has made a lasting impact, changing the way they think about their everyday habits and the small changes we can all make.”<\/p>\n

A range of clean-up events occur across the shire each year, and individuals can either start their own clean-up or register with an existing one.<\/p>\n

Schools can demonstrate to students the impact of waste on the local environment and empower young people to contribute to their community and the natural world.<\/p>\n

Businesses can become involved with team-building exercises, education events or corporate challenges.<\/p>\n

“If you have a favourite spot that you’d like to sparkle, register a clean-up today and get your friends and family to come along. Let’s make 2025 the best year yet,” van Amstel said.<\/p>\n
