{"id":105506,"date":"2025-03-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=105506"},"modified":"2025-03-12T21:22:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T10:22:46","slug":"roller-derby-star-on-the-ride-of-her-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/roller-derby-star-on-the-ride-of-her-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Roller derby star on the ride of her life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CHANCE to represent her country on the world stage in roller derby has driven Sarah Sugars to become one of the best talents on skates in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Sugars, 28, plays and coaches at the Tweed Valley Rollers and has just been selected in the national team for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian team will contest the Roller Derby World Cup in Austria on July 3 to July 6.<\/p>\n<p>Roller derby is a fast-paced roller-skating contact sport noted for its skill and physicality.<\/p>\n<p>Sugars came from a gymnastics background and has played the game for close to a decade.<\/p>\n<p>She always wanted to represent at the highest level and will now have the chance to compete against the biggest names at international level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big achievement and a lot of work has gone into it,&#8221; Sugars said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t really play team sports growing up and to be able to do this as a 28-year-old is special.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/image0_82779.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Sugars will represent Australia in roller derby for the first time at the World Cup in July. Photo: BETH THOMPSON@SKATEPIXBYSTITCH.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most athletes in other sports have probably missed their opportunity by the time they reach my age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sugars plays as a jammer which is one of the main point scorers and most important positions in determining the outcome of a game.<\/p>\n<p>She plays with the Brisbane City Rollers in the Queensland league and still coaches the next crop of players at Tweed.<\/p>\n<p>She describes the game as a cross between American football and chess.<\/p>\n<p>By day she works in finance and said roller derby players come from all walks of life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People at work think I&#8217;m crazy, but they&#8217;ve always been very supportive,&#8221; Sugars said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like most people in the sport, I watched the movie Whip It and was interested in finding a local league after that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was terrified when I first saw it at Tweed in 2016, but I eventually learnt how to play, and I&#8217;ve been hooked ever since.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/image21_88272.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roller derby is a physical game played at national and international level. Photo: BETH THOMPSON@SKATEPIXBYSTITCH.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Australia were silver medalists when the Roller Derby World Cup was last played in Manchester, England in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The sport took a hit at national and local level during the COVID-19 pandemic and has slowly bounced back.<\/p>\n<p>The United States team won the gold medal in 2018 and will be favourites again this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Americans bring a lot of flair to the game and they have the top names in the sport who I&#8217;ve watched for years,&#8221; Sugars said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The game has evolved into a highly skilled athletic sport over the years and it&#8217;s really popular around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Australian team is self funded and open to donations to assist with expenses at <a href=\"http:\/\/asf.org.au\/projects\/queensland-roller-derby-leagues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asf.org.au\/projects\/queensland-roller-derby-leagues<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A CHANCE to represent her country on the world stage in roller derby has driven Sarah Sugars to become one of the best talents on skates in Australia.
