{"id":106728,"date":"2025-05-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=106728"},"modified":"2025-05-08T16:26:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T06:26:29","slug":"sports-fields-to-reopen-after-irrigation-and-surface-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/sports-fields-to-reopen-after-irrigation-and-surface-upgrades\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports fields to reopen after irrigation and surface upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW turf has been laid with Williams Reserve at Lennox Head set to reopen after improvements to its irrigation system and playing surface.<\/p>\n<p>The site has been fenced off since December and will soon be available for the Lennox Head Trojans rugby union club who train and play at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Saunders Oval at Ballina has undergone similar work with both expected to be reopened this month.<\/p>\n<p>It is mainly used for soccer in winter and touch football in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>There were delays on both projects due to wet weather and the impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Shite Council said contractors were working as quickly as possible to complete the improvements.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Williams Reserve has a new irrigation system, and the playing surface has been regraded and turfed,&#8221; a council spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/IMG_0859_75319.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Work continues on a new car park and other upgrades at Lake Ainsworth. Photo: MITCHELL CRAIG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Saunders Oval has had major surface improvements and grading completed as well as getting a new surface.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, council has continued a range of works at Lake Ainsworth to improve environmental impacts, while maintaining the site as a recreation hotspot.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of council&#8217;s Coast Management Plan with support from the state and federal government.<\/p>\n<p>There has been upgrades to the car park, including a stormwater infiltration strip for better control of run-off into the lake.<\/p>\n<p>A new pedestrian footpath and boardwalk is being built with furniture and bollards.<\/p>\n<p>Work has also been done on bush regeneration with tree planting and landscaping projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW turf has been laid with Williams Reserve at Lennox Head set to reopen after improvements to its irrigation system and playing surface.
