CONSTRUCTION of a major intersection upgrade in the Ballina Shire worth $1.53 million which includes a new roundabout to improve traffic flow and safety on the road is now in its final stages.<\/p>\n
Ballina Shire Council is in the fourth stage of the project at the intersection of Byron Bay Road and Byron Street at Lennox Head is expected to be finished in June.<\/p>\n
The finished project will make it safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians coming in and out of Lennox Head.<\/p>\n
Work includes a finished central roundabout and installation of concrete medians.<\/p>\n
It will also see an asphalt pavement shared path connection for pedestrians and cyclists, pedestrian refuges, line marking\u00a0and signage.<\/p>\n
Ballina Shire mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project is part of council’s ongoing commitment with strategic infrastructure investments.<\/p>\n
“As our community continues to expand, it is vital we invest in infrastructure that not only meets current needs but also ensures the safety of all residents,” she said.<\/p>\n
“The new roundabout will improve traffic flow but more importantly it will provide a safer commute for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.”<\/p>\n
“The T-intersection at Byron Street has become increasingly congested and hazardous over recent year.”<\/p>\n
Earlier stages of the project included a temporary roundabout while earthworks, pavement, kerb and gutter construction started.<\/p>\n
Due to recent wet weather, several potholes have formed in the area with new asphalt laid.<\/p>\n
Road closures were in place and were scheduled to be finished by Wednesday, May 28.<\/p>\n
Traffic control and VMS boards have been used and will assist with any further changes to traffic conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
