HUNDREDS of local volunteers were recognised at the Thank a First Responder Day at Ballina RSL Club, with ambulance officers, police, surf lifesavers and marine rescue crews gathering for the annual event.<\/p>\n
The day highlights the services and people who play a crucial role in keeping the community safe, particularly during emergencies, rescues and extreme weather events.<\/p>\n
“We’ve seen firsthand just how vital our first responders are. This year during Cyclone Alfred we were reminded just how essential they are,” Ballina Shire mayor Sharon Cadwallader said.<\/p>\n
“They were prepared and helped the community feel safe; many are volunteers who put their own safety aside to protect us.<\/p>\n
“It’s work many of us cannot do; they’re often first on the scene and last to leave. We thank them for being there when we need them most.”<\/p>\n
Fortem Australia supported the event with its focus on the mental health and wellbeing of first responders and their families.<\/p>\n
Fundraising from the day helps the group provide career management and mental health literacy services for volunteers and others in need of support.<\/p>\n
Fortem CEO Michael Willing said the day pays tribute to police officers, paramedics, firefighters, emergency call operators, SES and other rescue groups.<\/p>\n
“Our first responders are such a valuable part of our communities and they and their families sacrifice so much to ensure they are always there for us,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We know that being a first responder is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be confronting, traumatic and dangerous.<\/p>\n
“That can impact the mental health and wellbeing of both first responders and their families.<\/p>\n
“Saying thank you is such a small gesture, but it can have a great impact on the wellbeing of those who are the recipients of that gratitude.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
