LISMORE Theatre Company is inviting locals to take part in weekly workshops as part of its 12\u2013month community theatre project, Embodied Theatre: Workshops-to-Stage.<\/p>\n

The project, led by Deborah Mills, who holds a Master of Arts with Honours in Dance-Theatre, is developing Freefall, a full-length performance set to premiere at Rochdale Theatre in February 2026.<\/p>\n

The work is inspired by an apocalyptic fairytale exploring themes of fear and freedom. It places the human body at the centre of the story, using movement, text, music and props to create what Mills calls “moving metaphors”.<\/p>\n

Participants spend the workshops experimenting with physical improvisation, developing scenes that will form part of the final production. In the next stage of the project, they will learn and explore body syncing, a technique where text and movement are developed separately so audiences can see one element and hear another.<\/p>\n

Organisers say the workshops are designed to be a safe and welcoming space for participants of all experience levels. They are open to anyone with an interest in improvisation, movement, prop work, script development or performance.<\/p>\n

Weekly workshops run every Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm at Rochdale Theatre in Goonellabah, from August 5 to September 30.<\/p>\n

Three all-day Sunday workshops will also be held on September 7 and September 21 at Uniting Church Hall, 80 Keen Street, Lismore.<\/p>\n

Cost is $75 for the term, or $50 for Lismore Theatre Company members. Membership is $15.<\/p>\n
