{"id":109212,"date":"2025-08-19T11:07:31","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T01:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/flash-flood-warning-northern-rivers-braces-for-180mm-of-rain\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T12:59:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T02:59:13","slug":"flash-flood-warning-northern-rivers-braces-for-180mm-of-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/flash-flood-warning-northern-rivers-braces-for-180mm-of-rain\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash flood warning: Northern Rivers braces for 180mm of rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NORTHERN Rivers residents are being urged to prepare for potential flash flooding, with heavy rainfall forecast to hit the region this week \u2014 including up to 100mm expected on Thursday alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting up to 45mm of rain in the Byron Bay area on Wednesday, up to 100mm on Thursday, and up to 35mm on Friday, with conditions expected to ease over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Tweed region is forecast to receive up to 50mm on Wednesday, 100mm on Thursday, and 25mm on Friday. Ballina is facing similar conditions, with rainfall also expected to reach up to 30mm on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Lismore is expected to get up to 45mm of rain on Wednesday, 80mm on Thursday and 45mm on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging communities to prepare for minor to moderate flooding, warning that rivers and creeks may rise quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that catchments in northern NSW are saturated from recent weather events and will respond quickly to this rainfall,\u201d NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to monitor the development of this weather system, and we will issue any warnings if required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Commissioner Malone said the NSW SES is ready to respond to a potential increase in requests for help, but encouraged residents to take proactive steps.<\/p>\n<p>These include downloading the Hazards Near Me app and setting up a watch zone for your local neighbourhood, to receive the latest alerts and safety advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that everyone understands their own flood risk and has an emergency plan in place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means knowing where you will go and what you will do if flooding affects you and your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents are advised to visit the NSW SES website or follow their local SES service for updates. For the most current weather information, check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Meteorology<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>If you need assistance from the NSW SES, call 132 500.
